Meet Cinder and Wisp
On the hidden island of Mistmora, magic isn't something you carry. It's something that comes to life. When a young witch or wizard masters their very first skill, that power doesn't just settle into them as a glowing mark on the arm — it takes a shape, a breath, a heartbeat of its own. It becomes a companion: a living creature made of your element, bonded to you for life. Today, meet two of them. — Cinder, the ember fox — Cinder is Soren's companion, and she is exactly as much trouble as you'd expect a creature made of fire to be. She's a lean, quick-footed fox the colour of banked coals, with fur that glows ember-orange along her spine and tail as though she's lit from somewhere deep inside. When Soren is calm, she only smoulders — soft and warm, leaving faint trails of sparks wherever she pads. When his temper flares, or his fire wakes, so does she: her tail streams small flames and her eyes burn brighter. Cinder is clever, fierce, and endlessly mischievous. She runs hot in every sense — bolting toward trouble before anyone can think better of it, stealing the warm spot by the fire, and curling against Soren like a living hearth when the nights on Mistmora turn cold. She is, quite literally, his fire given paws and a will of her own. — Wisp, the frost owl — Where Cinder is all spark and motion, Wisp is stillness. Wisp is Mira's companion: a small, pale owl of frost-touched feathers in soft grey and frost-blue, silent as falling snow. Where she perches, a delicate rime of ice blooms across the wood. When she flies, the air cools and tiny crystals drift in her wake. Wisp is watchful in a way that mirrors Mira herself — she misses nothing, sees clearly in the dark, and turns her great calm eyes on exactly the thing everyone else has overlooked. She rarely makes a sound. But she has a habit of gliding down to land on Mira's shoulder at precisely the moment Mira needs reminding that she isn't alone. "Fire and frost. The two that should cancel each other out — and somehow never quite do." — A friendship made of steam — Here's the thing about a fox of fire and an owl of frost: by every rule of nature, they should be enemies. Heat and cold. Spark and snow. One should put the other out. They don't. When Cinder and Wisp are near each other, something small and impossible happens — a soft curl of steam rises between them, the warmth and the cold meeting in the middle and refusing, gently, to destroy one another. They chase each other through the towers. Wisp drops silently onto Cinder's back; Cinder pretends to be furious about it. On the coldest nights, you'll find a frost-blue owl tucked against a sleeping ember fox, neither one cancelling the other, both a little better for the company. It's no accident that their bond looks so much like the one growing between the two who carry them. Cinder and Wisp are the first, wordless proof of something Mistmora keeps trying to teach: that opposites aren't meant to cancel. Sometimes, when they choose each other, they make something entirely new. — Cinder and Wisp first appear in Spark & Frost, Book One of the Elements of Witches and Wizards series. Meet the witches and wizards they belong to — and the island that brought them together — at the start of the journey. Spark & Frost · Elements of Witches and Wizards — Book One.
